Monday struggles = Etsy 101

November 4, 2013

How’s this for braveheart Monday. I’ve dedicated most of today to learning how to…and concurrently starting that long talked about Etsy shop. (because what’s the point of actually reading the directions if you don’t follow them at the same time…lol) Gosh, but it’s confusing.

All of you who have Etsy shops out there, how did you ever do it!??!

In preparation for all of this I bought Jeanne Oliver’s ecourse: Building a Creatively Made Business. I bought it ages ago and so I figure I better use the info before I run out of time. 🙂 I must say it’s a brilliant little course and I’m learning a lot from her. Also in preparation for this I cleaned up the house…as you do…picked some last garden dahlias and bought some chrysanthemums. (because one must always start difficult projects with beautiful flowers, don’t you think so?)

morning flowers

Also, as rain is coming overnight, this was waiting for me this morning. No, not the cats, they wait for no one…lol. Look beyond them to that carpet of leaves. Still, not as bad as poor Robert who has to deal with the seven 100 ft maples all on his own. But then, there’s a riding mower at West Cottage and only girl power here.

So I worked and learned and learned and worked and ran off to the bank, the gym, and home again for lunch and to work and learn some more. I looked up examples and read thru millions of websites for hints and idea, and raked up the leaves and drank plenty of tea and I think I’m pretty close now. Of course I’ve lost the light now, so the things which are left are: photographing everything, editing, posting, and getting thru all the financial stuff.

I tried to tell Morgan how impressed with myself I am, but, if there isn’t people food in it, she’s not interested. 🙂

Hope I’m ready for this. (Hope you’re ready for this 🙂 )

Linking with Mary for Mosaic Monday. 🙂

Boy there’s a lot of smiley faces on this post!

Friday random. It's where my head's at these days.
A soft Sunday morning

We seldom feel ready, but I am confident you will work through this to create something amazing! Love the kitty support (or lack of it) as a back drop.

Love that second picture of your furbabies.

i could not even think of starting anything else with the blog troubles, honing photogrpahy and still learning LR.

Aw thank you Abrianna. I had to take that thru the door a split second before they realised I was there and could open it. It’s a bit overwhelming, this blogging/etsy business, but it’s slowly coming together. If you ever want to ask some questions, I’d try my best to give you as much info as I have. 🙂

Congratulations on surmounting your learning curve. I just want to buy an artistic and colorful sheet of notes with an overlay! YEP : )

PS: I cannot find your page on Etsy, can you send me a link please?

There is so much i love about your post but the photos were amazing, they made me feel all warm? hehe, weird. anyway, the cats and the leaves are beautiful and good luck with all your ventures 🙂

    • Reply Veronica November 4, 2013 at 7:48 pm

Hi Christine, thank you so much. I’d rather be photographing the cats than trying to figure all this out! 🙂

your learning curve is getting better. nicely posted and this makes an interesting read.

    • Reply Veronica November 4, 2013 at 7:47 pm

Thank you so much Amar. Those cats bring me a welcome distraction. 🙂

Good luck to you! I remember seeing an Etsy promotional video where they featured Nancy of Nancy’s Daily Dish who sells transferware. It was exciting to see how an entrepreneur could take a hobby and passion into a real business. I’ll look forward to hearing how this learning process goes for you!

    • Reply Veronica November 4, 2013 at 7:46 pm

Thanks so much Dewena. One thing’s for sure, I’ll share everything I find out. 🙂

I have a question…why etsy? what about big cartel? etsy has changed so much in recent years and they’ve just opened up (formally) for mass-produced stuff from China. thryve never done much to combat copy cats. they’ve lost their soul and the plot, in addition to being very user unfriendly with the cumbersome way of listing items. so while I definitely think you should be selling your art online, have you considered other venues?

    • Reply Veronica November 4, 2013 at 7:46 pm

Hi Julie. I don’t know much about Etsy and even less about Big Cartel. The only reason Etsy is because great directions are included in the little ecourse I bought and so I thought it might be a starting point. I’ll look into Big Cartel tomorrow. 🙂 None of it seems very ideal. I’d love to set something bespoke up right thru my website, but then again, how do I start that? Maybe I should talk to a coder. 🙂

Best of luck, Veronica! Looking forward to learning what you’re learning!

  • Reply Alynia November 4, 2013 at 10:03 pm

I did it by just starting.
Do you have stock? Well, make nice pictures, and put them in listings with a nice text, and you’re halfway done. Adding to your listings regularly (f.i. by putting something new in your shop every day or week) helps too.

I admit, thinking about shop policy etc. took me a while, but I looked a lot at how others do that, and I just keep learning every day. It just does get easier when you start.

Good luck with your shop Veronica!
I’m assuming there is going to be art??
So excited to see it up and running soon!!

Well done you. It is so time consuming, and that’s without the photo editing and uploading etc. I have been hoping for a few weeks to load some items onto my folksy shop – but haven’t yet found the clear few hours of time I need to properly get to grips with it again. Juliex

You will have an awesome shop. Wow, had no idea about all the things one would need to learn. You are an inspiration! Looking forward to reading more about your journey with opening your shop.

  • Reply Becca November 5, 2013 at 4:14 am

Yay! Can’t wait to see your shop. I’m sure there will be lots of beautiful things to buy. I’d better start saving now. *sigh*
    LOVE all the smileys!! 😉

I’ve looked at Etsy myself and didn’t go any further. I’ll follow your posts as you decide if it’s for you.

  • Reply November 5, 2013 at 5:01 am

I must be confused as now I do not see a link to your Etsy items?

  • Reply Sara V November 5, 2013 at 5:31 am

Veronica, I congratulate you on all your hard work and determination–I know it will be wonderful when it’s up. Also love how you managed to vase those flowers in pure brilliant white light–amazing! 😉

I have no doubt you will rock the Etsy world! And I am pretty sure Morgan agrees. Why else would she be so relaxed about it? 🙂

And you’ll ace this Etsy stuff. Strangely, I’ve been wanting to start creative art/business courses too– I have them all written out. Now it’s just a matter of braving the posting of them! 🙂

  • Reply uppoppedafox November 6, 2013 at 7:42 am

I’ve never started an Etsy shop but I had a friend tell me it was much more complicated than she thought it would be to set it up and do it optimally. Good luck!

well I see other bloggers with Etsy shops – but that is as far as I have ever got. I hope it is a good outlet for sales for you. Good luck with it!
Have a great weekend ahead and thank you for stopping by my blog this week.

Ah yes! Every difficult project seems a tad easier when there are fresh flowers in a vase nearby. I would like to create an Etsy Shop too but it does sound tricky!

  • Reply Rose November 8, 2013 at 7:04 am

I have wondered how hard they are to set up…I would have to get stuff created first. Seems like everything I make, I give away. LOL
