A summer poetry contest from The River

The River Journal has issued a summer poetry contest to a photo prompt. Here is the Facebook page. The photo is this brilliant photo:

Here is what I came up with:

 Uncertainty

Across the miles my thoughts fly to you
A swarm of golden moths
To beat at the window panes of the dark

Will you hear them and let them in
Or will you sleep and wake to find them at dawn, dead on the sill
Will you gather them in a towel and throw them away

They will continue to fly
Until they form a golden rainbow over sea and land
Across which I could walk

You send a voice to me
On brittle wings, dove-gray wings
But it flies through a course of nets and snares

Reaching me it falls exhausted
And with its dying breath
It whispers a word I cannot grasp

I look at the sky
And feel I’m stuck here
A tree with severed roots

I like your poem. I’d like to hear it read out loud.

Veronica – I love “Uncertainty.” Several lines resonate with me, especially ‘golden moths/to beat at the window panes of the dark’; ‘a word I cannot grasp’; ‘a tree with severed roots.’ Thank you so much for your words!!! The photo is stunning. I trust you submitted the poem? Let us know the outcome!!!
