Market morning
Chloe and I took the morning off.
I had an appointment downtown first thing this morning and, after it, we went for a little breakfast and a good mooch just over the water at the public market.
We walked around the stalls and I found some beautiful black/purple figs I really felt like having. Isn’t it wonderful to walk around so many yummy options and pick out exactly what you feel like eating? How often do we get a chance to do that? We all should once in a while; so good for the soul.
Let me show you some of our favourite finds at the market.
There is a little store at the market selling hand crafted, natural, local and organic soaps.
C loved these ice lolly ones.
And I loved this solid shampoo. The smell was wonderful. I wonder if it works. Anyone have experience with solid shampoos? I know Lush makes some.
We walked across the street to find a busker singing You Are My Sunshine with the cutest little tyke holdingΒ a ukulele.
Then we had a good mooch in one of our favourite stores Paper Ya.
There is very little I love more than paper and pens and lovely stationery products. How about these writing pads for brilliant ideas and laundry lists! π
I love that people are making old fashioned paper weights again. This one with this little golden bird in a peacock hat is the one I’d have on my desk.
C loved these crowned owls. Aren’t they great?
We found a store which had tiled an entire wall with Sid Dickens tiles. Do you know these tiles? Maybe not. Sid Dickens is a Vancouver based artist and manufacturer of these 3D tiles. They’re just beautiful to look at. C has the horse tile.
Just across from that store is Maiwa Handprints. I love this store because it’s full of fair trade, organic, cotton materials, hand blocked and dyed.
They also sell some of the blocks.
I was just thinking that a lovely design, which I could print from one of these blocks, might make a fantastic background design on a piece of paper for one of my lino cuts.
Or maybe I could carve one to look like this funky cow/armadillo creature. π
The last store we went into is a new store called Hang Out, where we were invited to…er…hang out! Loved it! Loved these chair hammocks. The most comfy, wonderful way to relax in the world. Now were trying to figure out just where and how we can hang a couple. Lol.

i have one of those tiles β¦ i bought it in a gallery in south beach some years back .. its the queen of hearts, i adore anything heart(s). and you know, of course you know, you can make one of those paperweights β¦ i did some as gifts one holiday season
Veronica
Boy, he sure get around…lol. Good for him and his company. π
Yes I do know that. π I have some very old paper weights at home, and I’m afraid the new ones don’t come close to the lustre and weight and just general loveliness of the old ones.

apparently my tiles been ‘retired’ http://www.siddickens.com/shop/proddetail.php?prod=T161
Veronica
Yeah, he does that. π

What a fun morning! So many lovely things to enjoy!
Veronica
I know! It was very hard for us to leave and we weren’t quite ready to get back to work. π
Dana Fulton
Thank you for sharing your day with all of us! I had never heard of Sid Dickens but I loved that tile wall and will definitely check out his work. What a lovely market seen through your eyes!
Veronica
Hi Dana, it’s lovely, fun art, isn’t it? Except it’s very commercially made…not sure if that is a problem for you. He does retire some tiles and they end up selling on some where like ebay or craigslist for a lot more as collectibles.

Love your trip to the market. Going to our farmer’s market here tomorrow, can’t wait to see what we find! I brought my Sid tiles with me when we moved from Vanc Island to NS in Feb. They are all still safely packed away until the reno’s are done. The soaps are so beautiful. I use all sorts of Lush products and love them. I am with C, those owls are sweet and the paperweight with the bird would have flown off the shelf and home with me, I love all things bird! Thanks for sharing your day.
Veronica
Hi Patty. Oh gosh, that packing/unpacking is hell, isn’t it? And renos in the middle! Good luck with everything sweetie. I’m so glad you have a farmer’s market where you are. One of C’s friends lives in NS now, (they went to high school together and after grad her family moved), it looks so very lovely there, according to her photos. Do you have a blog or other social media where I could get to know you more? I’d love to. π
julochka
ahh, you make me long for a market. tho’ i did find some handmade soap last weekend in Flensborg, but there weren’t any awesome textiles or carved stamps. *sigh*
Veronica
Aw Julie, I hope some farmer’s markets or something open up around you. Hey, maybe you could start one! (You know, with all the spare time you have…er…) π
EllaDee
Market mornings are the best, and I enjoyed the virtual stroll – we like similar things π
Veronica
Oh lovely! Hey, there are these new farmer’s markets and also night markets popping up all over town. I’ve caught a few farmer’s markets but never a night market. Doesn’t that sound like fun? I’ll try to find one and report. π
