Where she relishes the last day of summer
How lucky can a girl get?
The forecast was for rain, which must have been amended sometime between the downpour of last night and the shaky sun of this morning, and maybe it was a warm easterly wind and maybe it’s just because the forecasters lie like a rug, but for whatever reason, we, Chloe mom and I, found a warm and welcoming day.
We headed out to the seaside market and stopped in at Whole Foods for a little breakfast and tea; coffee for mom.
C grabbed a newspaper and she and mom decided to give the crossword a go. Mom said, “Saturday crossword? You’ll be lucky to get seven.” C got 13! (OK the iphone helped…lol)
Then we went for a nice long walk beside the ocean.
What a difference a week makes. I can’t believe that we were swimming in this same ocean just a few days ago and now the only people in the water were the fishermen in their waterproof waders.
At the allotment gardens the veggies and flowers were still going strong and I spent a long time smelling each late sweet pea, rose and marigold because I wanted to capture that sweet scent, remember it and hang on to it till next time.
By midday the sun shone down warm and inviting,
and while signs of fall were all around us…
just for today, nobody cared. π

It was surprisingly warm today, even after the rain storms began. It really is hard to believe it is autumn in the Pacific Northwest, yet the crisp fall weather is just around the corner. What a beautiful way to spend the last day of summer. A day with your mother & daughter enjoying each other’s company and this weather.

I know Kathy, I couldn’t believe it. We walked down to the ocean in light sweaters and were boiling in T shirts within a few minutes. How lucky are we to get this lovely weather. π

Conkers! I shall miss (sort of) having a house full of conkers. Even my “baby” is too old now to collect handfuls on the way home from school…. I shan’t miss trying to get rid of them once they are getting old and wrinkly, but that lovely glossy brown when they are first out – what a glorious colour! There’s something people can look at when they look questioningly at me when I say my favourite colour is brown… Happy Autumn!
Veronica
I completely understand Kate, and, when I hold them in my hand, I think my favourite colour might be that deep chestnut too. Anyway, you should just go out there and collect handfulls of conkers and put them in bowls all around the house. And if anyone says anything just remember what we say: stuff ’em all. π

Beautiful Blog and a beautiful daughter. Are those your huskies V?
Veronica
No Kathryn, I had bigger dogs, malamutes. Wish they were mine though. I love the happy, little faces on these types of dogs the most. π

I had a 10 month old malamute when my first son was born. One morning within 4 days after he came home from the hospital , the dog was standing IN THE CRIB, overtop of him just looking down at my son.
The dog was gone by sunset sadly.

Aw, they can be a bit of a handful when they make judgements about their pack. They are big animals, no mistake. I don’t blame you, I wouldn’t have taken a chance with my child, no way!

A perfect last day of summer. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Veronica
Now I’m looking back at it Michelle and thinking that it really was a most perfect day. (Mind you that’s looking back thru two days or relentless rain.)
Judy
Veronica, a lovely way to spend the last day of summer..Happy Fall Day..Judy
Veronica
Happy fall day Judy. Hope you are still having lovely warm days out East. π

those huskies are gorgeous … i used to do the NY Times crossword every day … but not so much in long time … now Toonman does it … every day in ink!
Veronica
They were so beautiful! Really, the NY Times? Holy smokes. I’m completely naff at crosswords. Usually I get about a handful of words, but I noticed if I’m doing them more often I get better. This crossword had the clue “Charles Nelson _____ Game show staple”. I got that one! On the other hand, how’s my 21yr old supposed to know that? LOL
