A little sad but a lot of happy in one morning
Last night, as I was walking across the back garden, I heard a small rustling noise at the foot of the basement stairs. There was a weak little finch in the leaves. I thought it was a good thing I found him because just then there was an orange streak behind me; the neighbourβs aggressive cat.
I cradled the finch in my hands and, remembering what the vet advised about the last bird we rescued, I put him into a cage in the garage to recover with a bit of soft blanket and a small dish of water.
Iβm so sad to say that sometime during the night his little body stopped. I think he probably flew into the loft window and fell the three floors to the basement stair well. That’s a hard fall for such a little creature. This morning I wrapped him up in the bit of blanket and buried him under my favorite yellow rose.
This is how it goes sometimes.
Inside I poured myself another cup of tea, pulled back the curtains to let the sun in and watched Morgan and Milo play. C joined me and soon we were smiling again.

Awww. Poor little bird.
This morning I saw a video of a guy who found a mouse in his room and caught it then released back into the wild. A short while after it scurried away, a hawk picked it up and fly away. Sometimes the best of intentions have bad endings.
Cute cats.

Oh no Linda! One time in England I brought in a blanket from the garage to use as a drop cloth for painting and I brought a scared little mouse in with it. There was a mad chase to catch the mouse before Theo saw it and decided it was time for elevensies. I carried it out to the field to let it go. Hope it survived.

I really love the way you use light in your photographs. They look so warm and inviting. You take the little scenes and moments we ignore everyday and highlight their beauty. I would love to be able to do that!
Veronica
Jeaninne, thank you so much. π Try this next time you have your camera: put your subject in front with the sun or light behind it. Do you have Photoshop? I can tell you several tricks to help.
Jeannine Bergers Everett
I am starting from the very beginning. I haven’t used a camera that wasn’t my Iphone in years. I want to start though. The more writing I do, the less I want to rely on creative commons photographs. It makes me feel exposed.
Veronica
Jeannine, you can do that with your iphone too. I took all those beach love Sunday photos a couple posts with my iphone. Remember you can use any photo from my site you want any time you want to. No worries about anything like copyright or permission…ever. π

Love the photographs. Poor finch but lucky that someone tried to help.
Veronica
Thank you Carol. It’s so touch and go with such little creatures, isn’t it.

I think one can see that you are an artist by looking at your photograph’s…the light and the composition. Glad you tried to save the finch.
Veronica
Thank you Sabra, so sweet for you to say that. My dear late friend June West, who extremely rarely gave a compliment, was a photographer for the University of BC botanical gardens well into her 90’s. She once said, “You have an eye.” That’s all she said but it meant so much. I’m glad I tried too. There’s no way my heart would let me leave the finch there. I wanted to hold it in my hands and make it feel safe and secure and cradle it all night but that woudln’t have been good for it. The vet said that human contact must be very brief because it could put the bird into more shock.

poor finch π
but thanks for the cat in a bag pics – cats and bags, excellent (especially such a handsome black and white one)

I know Amanda π Was just
stalkingreading your site and had trouble leaving a comment. There’s no immediate comment place except to click on the post itself. But you probably know that already. πDonna
Awww, poor little finch. Very sad.
Your cats are adorable!
Veronica
Thank you Donna. Your puppies are adorable too. Chloe’s boyfriend has two Doxies. They are such wonderful little characters.

That makes me so sad when the birds run into my windows. Love those finches–you gave it a proper resting place and that is a good thing π Cats have such a knack for making me laugh. Yours are beautiful!
Veronica
Thank you Sara. I think the problem with the loft windows is that they are perfectly in line and the poor finch may have thought he could fly right thru. If that’s what happened; I couldn’t find any traces of a bird hit.

Poor little bird!

I know Mama Zen, I know. π
